About
House of Skate

Your Skate Destination

House of Skate is your destination for all things roller skating!

Our facility is Calgary’s only roller rink experience with a variety of open roller skate times for families and youth, or if you prefer, adults only, party booking space for birthdays and special occasions, and roller skating classes for all skill levels.

Inside you will also find Calgary’s full service roller and inline skate shop, Nerd Roller Skates.

In the Beginning

Calgary Roller Skate was created after a chance meeting in 2018 between two long-time Calgarians and local entrepreneurs Theresa Tucci and Roxy (Kathleen) Janzen, who met just before the closure of Calgary’s oldest roller rink. They were inspired to create Calgary Roller Skate to bring roller skating to more people but after 5 years of Pop Ups, workshops and classes they decided to give people what they really want; a House of Skate.

Things are only impossible until they are not.

Kathleen “Roxy Acetylene” started roller skating in 2006 after graduating from the Alberta College of Art & Design with a degree in metalsmithing. As a person who never played team sports or skated much, choosing roller derby as a hobby was a personal challenge. She became a founding member of both Calgary Roller Derby Association and Chinook City Roller Derby. Her contributions to the community include being a player and organizer for 9 years with events such as Calgary’s first Roller Derby entry in the Pride Parade, and the still legendary Heroes vs Zombies bout at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.

She co-founded Nerd Roller Skates, Calgary’s specialist quad roller skate shop in 2012 and works to fit skates to skaters. “Roxy” encourages people to find the same joy and inspiration in skating that has motivated her for 17 years. In 2018 she founded Calgary Roller Skate with Theresa to make skating accessible to more people, and in 2023 they founded Calgary’s House of Skate.

“Live life outside of your comfort zone,
because that is where the magic happens!”

Theresa is a dancer, instructor, choreographer, skater, and owner of Free Spirit Dance. Her mother put her on a pair of roller skates when she was just two years old. As a child, Theresa spent countless hours in her room creating dance routines inspired by Solid Gold Dancers, MuchMusic and In Living Color. She learned various moves at the Friday night community hall teen dances. The funk, groove and need to move have long been a family tradition as she comes from a bunch of crazy-musical-fun-loving East Coasters. Theresa took her first actual dance class in her early 20’s and has never looked back. She has training in various dance styles such as Salsa, Cha Cha Cha and Afro-Cuban, West African, Ballroom, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Funk styles and House. Theresa has traveled to Cuba, Costa Rica, Croatia, Los Angeles, Mexico, Miami, New York, Boston and across Canada.

She has performed with Latin artists such as Puerto Rican Power, Oscar de Leon, Mendez and Eddy K. She presented her own choreographic work for Mpact: Invisible, The Cypher and Motion, and Free Spirit Dance. Theresa is known for her high energy classes. She  proudly created a safe environment for dance, where students are not restricted by outside opinions or weighed down by the troubles of everyday life.

Her driving passions are: dance/fitness, the arts, and empowering others to love the skin they are in with a strong belief that it is never too late to start. Reconnecting to her first love, roller skating, Theresa was inspired to create Calgary Roller Skate in collaboration with Roxy in 2018 and grew it to become House of Skate today.
